The opposite of on-line or "real-time." Cache: An area on a computer or server for temporary storage. CRT: Cathode-Ray Tube. The basis of the television screen and the standard computer screen. Directory: A catalog for filenames and other directories stored on a disk. A directory is a way of organizing and grouping the files so that the user is not overwhelmed by a long list of them. Download: In communications, to transfer a copy of a file from a remote computer to the requesting computer by means of a modem or network. Food Cost: Beginning Inventory + Purchases-Ending Inventory = Cost of Goods Used. IT: Information Technology. Often refers to use of technology in general. LAN: Local Area Network. A group of computers and other devices dispersed over a relatively limited area and connected by a communications link that enables any devices to interact with any other on the network. The devices on a LAN are known as nodes. Nodes are connected by cables through which information is transmitted. Operating System: The software that controls the allocation and usage of hardware resources such as memory, central processing unit (CPU) time, disk space, and peripheral devices. The operating system is the foundation software on which applications depend. Reboot: To restart a computer by reloading the operating system. Scalable: Of or relating to the characteristic of a piece of hardware or software or a network that makes it possible for it to expand--or shrink--to meet its future needs and circumstances. USB: Universal Serial Bus. USB is designed to support the ability to automatically add and configure new devices without having to shut down and restart the system.
